Paparelli's Movie Reviews
Well, it's just, like... my opinion, man

Mission: Impossible 3

Sunday, July 09, 2006

year: 2006
directed by: J.J. Abrams
written by: J.J. Abrams, Bruce Geller
notable cast: Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Michelle Monaghan

Paparelli's rating: (0 = worst, **** = best)

A disappointing movie that relies heavily on all-too-familiar plot and story-telling devices we recognize from the first "Mission: Impossible" movie.

The spy boss turns out to be the top bad guy and Cruise uses a hyper-realistic mask to deceive the nasty culprits... you've got to be kidding me!

There is nothing left from the classy, clever spy athmosphere that was so appealing in the original tv series. MI3 is all about a frightened, helpless Cruise who faces threat after threat and actually never seems to be in control of a situation.

And I won't start about his acting. Really.

Well, there is one good thing in this movie: Michelle Monaghan! In "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" she was great and here she is again. I can hardly wait to see her in more substantial roles. What I like about her acting is that she has many layers. When she presents a certain emotion, there's always a thin second layer to be noticed, almost like added commentary. I have a feeling she has a wide range of roles she's able to deliver well and I hope to see more of her in future movies.
