Ever since the dawn of cinema quality capable 3D rendering systems, theatres have been plagued by an overload of tongue-in-cheek, semi-intellectual but pathetically romantic animated features.
The studio's who compete for the audience's attention seem convinced the best way to top eachother's movies is by replicating the other's story and characters (for instance compare 'Finding Nemo' with 'Shark Tale', and 'Madagascar' with 'The Wild', or this movie with 'Shrek').
A basic "boy meets girl" theme combined with a neverending stream of predictable wisecracks and puns makes 'Ice Age 2: the Meltdown' nothing more than just another instance of an in my view dried-up formula.
Perhaps I'm too harsh in my judgment, as the genre as a whole has little attraction to me. But surely one must agree that a lot of these movies bear more resemblance to eachother than normally could be expected of movies within a genre. It just seems they held on to the same mold too long.
And the squirrel, ..., well, I thought that was too much and too obvious too. I have to say that the funny animations made me burst out in laughter once of twice, but after a while it became boring just like the rest of the movie.
