Paparelli's Movie Reviews
Well, it's just, like... my opinion, man

Garfield 2: A Tail of Two Kitties

Sunday, July 09, 2006

year: 2006
directed by: Tim Hill
written by: Joel Cohen, Alec Sokolow
notable cast: Breckin Meyer, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Billy Connolly, Bill Murray

Paparelli's rating: (0 = worst, **** = best)

Every cliché they could find is crammed into this movie's plot. Almost every scene consists of gags or routines nicked from other movies. For instance, the mirror-scene from the Marx Brothers' "Duck Soup" is copied in it's entirety to the last detail without any mention of the original creator's identities. In my book that's good for a sock in the puss (and that, my friends, is quoting W.C. Fields).

Also the caring butler (remember "Arthur", "Trading Places") and the chatty, intelligent farm animals ("Babe") are astonishingly obvious rip-offs of other movies. I mean, what were they thinking?

It's so surprisingly boring and stupid that after ten minutes the feeling of having to sit through the rest of the movie amounts to sheer torture. I have never seen Billy Connelly this unfunny before, it was a shock!

Technically, the camerawork is good and the combination of 3D animation with live action seems natural and renders many nice shots throughout the movie. But it's simply ruined by the stupid story, that's all.

Also, there's no resemblance at all to the original cartoon version. Neither in Garfield's character and personality, nor in the kind of humour of the gags.
